Stage V emission standards: what do they mean for your diesel forklift?

All new diesel forklifts in Europe must comply with the Stage V emission standard. What does that entail, what do you notice about it in terms of use and maintenance — and when has electric become the more logical choice?

What is Stage V?

Stage V is the European emission standard for non-road mobile machinery, including forklifts. The standard sets strict limits on particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). New diesel engines are therefore equipped with aftertreatment such as a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and often SCR with AdBlue. All new diesel forklifts that we supply are fully Stage V compliant.

What do you notice about it in practice?

Modern Stage V diesels are cleaner and quieter, but require attention: a particulate filter must regularly reach operating temperature (regenerate). If your truck mostly runs short trips with a lot of idling, the filter can clog—resulting in extra maintenance. Especially with that usage profile, an electric truck is often the better choice.

Impact on maintenance and costs

For Stage V, plan for periodic filter maintenance and, if necessary, AdBlue refills. This makes the difference in maintenance costs compared to electric vehicles greater than it used to be—check the figures using our TCO guide. For heavy and long-term outdoor work, diesel remains unbeatable: torque, a five-minute refueling stop, and capacities of up to 30 tons in the Heavy Line.

Environmental Zones and On-Site Emission Requirements

More and more clients, construction sites, and inner-city projects are setting requirements for emissions or demanding completely zero-emission equipment. If you work at such locations, be sure to also read our article about the zero-emission construction site and the subsidy schemes that accelerate the transition.

Diesel or electric?

The rule of thumb in 2026: indoor and mixed-use applications → electric; heavy-duty, long-term, and rugged outdoor work → Stage V diesel. The electric lineup now extends up to 16 metric tons—and, starting in September 2026, even up to 18 metric tons with the 180B-X. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I still allowed to use my old diesel forklift?

Yes. Stage V applies to newly sold machines; existing trucks may continue to be used. However, please pay attention to the emission requirements of specific locations or clients.

Do all new diesel forklifts require AdBlue?

Above certain power ratings, Stage V engines operate with SCR aftertreatment and thus AdBlue. More compact engines sometimes suffice with a diesel particulate filter. We advise per model what is involved.

Is Stage V more expensive to maintain?

Item: filter regeneration and AdBlue require attention and periodic maintenance. With the right usage profile (long operating hours, outdoors), diesel nevertheless remains very cost-efficient.

What is the alternative to diesel up to 18 tons?

The electric Hyundai B-X series: available up to 16 tons and from September 2026 up to 18 tons with the 180B-X — emission-free, quiet, and with a Li-ion battery suitable for multi-shift operations.
