Buying a forklift: what should you look out for? The complete guide

Buying a forklift is an investment of thousands to tens of thousands of euros. With this guide from the official Hyundai importer, you will choose the right machine in 9 steps — without costly mistakes.

1. Determine the lifting capacity (with load center)

The lifting capacity on the data plate (e.g., 2,000 kg at a 500 mm load center) is not the same as what you can actually lift. Wider or deeper loads reduce the remaining capacity, as well as greater lift heights and attachments such as a sideshift. Rule of thumb: allow a 20–25% margin above your heaviest load. Not sure? We’ll calculate the residual capacity for you free of charge.

2. Choose the drive: electric, diesel, or LPG

Electric has become the standard for interior work and increasingly for exterior as well: quiet, emission-free, and low operating costs — view our electric forklifts from 1.5 to 18 tons. Diesel does the choice for heavy and rough outdoor work up to 30 tons (diesel forklifts). LPG is the flexible middle ground for mixed useLPG forklifts).

3. Mast, lifting height, and free lift

Measure both your collapsed mast height and your clearance heights (doors, containers). A triplex mast with free-lift lifts high but stays low when lowered — standard on our BE-X promotional models. Please note: the higher you lift, the lower the residual capacity.

4. Tires and surface

Slippery warehouse floor? Cushion or superelastic. Outdoor area with pavers or asphalt? Superelastic tires. Rough terrain? Pneumatic tires with tread. The wrong tire choice costs comfort, grip, and tire life.

5. Buy new or used

New offers maximum certainty, factory warranty and the latest technology; our new Hyundais are available from €23,950. A good used car is smart for a more limited budget or lower operating hours — view our technically inspected used forklifts starting from €6,500. When buying used, always pay attention to operating hours, maintenance history, and inspection status.

6. Buy, lease or rent

Buying is most advantageous with many operating hours and long-term deployment. Lease (from €339 p/m) keeps working capital free and makes costs predictable, including maintenance — read all about forklift leasing. Renting is ideal for peaks and projects.

7. Price and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

Look beyond the purchase price: energy, maintenance, tires, inspections, and residual value determine the actual cost per operating hour. A competitively priced A-brand machine with good service is almost always cheaper over 5 years than the cheapest offer. View current forklift prices.

8. Safety and inspection (VA-keur)

Every forklift in use must be periodically inspected and your drivers must be demonstrably competent. At our company, every machine — new and used — VA-inspected and roadworthy delivered, including instructions.

9. Subsidy: MIA\Vamil on electric

If you buy electric, you often benefit from tax advantages through the MIA/Vamil scheme. That can easily save you thousands of euros net. We provide the correct documentation for your accountant.

Conclusion: Anyone who goes through these 9 steps will buy the right forklift for years to come. Prefer direct personal advice? Request a quote — we will respond within 24 hours with a concrete proposal.
